How to Prep for a Carpet Cleaning Appointment

A few minutes of prep gets you a better clean and a faster appointment. Here's what helps before, during, and after.

Before the cleaner arrives: (1) pick up small items, cords, and breakables off the floor; (2) vacuum if you have time (it helps, but isn't required); (3) clear a spot to park near the entrance for the equipment and hoses; (4) secure pets in a room that isn't being cleaned; and (5) make a quick list of stains, pet areas, and anything you've already tried to treat. After cleaning, stay off the carpet until it's dry and keep air moving.

Before the appointment

  1. Clear the floor. Pick up toys, shoes, cords, floor plants, and anything small or breakable. The cleaner can move sofas and chairs; you handle the little stuff and electronics.
  2. A quick vacuum helps. It's not required — most services vacuum or pre-groom — but removing loose surface dirt lets the cleaning focus on what's ground in.
  3. Parking and access. Hot water extraction equipment runs from a portable machine or a truck-mount, so a clear spot near the door and an unobstructed path in helps. Mention stairs or a long carry on the phone.
  4. Pets. Secure pets in a room or area that isn't being cleaned, both for their comfort and so the work isn't interrupted.
  5. Make a list. Note problem stains, pet-accident areas, and anything you've already tried — especially store stain removers, which can affect how a spot responds.

During and after

  • Walk the rooms with the cleaner first to point out stains and pet areas — this is when the plan and the quote are confirmed.
  • Keep off the carpet until it's dry — usually a few hours with hot water extraction, faster in Bismarck's dry air. Wear clean socks if you must cross; outdoor shoes track new soil onto damp fibers.
  • Leave fans or the furnace fan running to move air across the carpet and speed drying.
